Of Synapses and Memories. Van Singel Fine Arts Center, Michigan, 2013

"Examine my heart and my mind;

For your love is ever before me,

And I walk continually in your truth."

(Psalm 26:3)

Of Synapses and Memories is an extension of Tree of Life V project (2010) and continuation of Window project series. Tree of Life V touched on a life journey into the psychological landscape of the mind, referring to the way we cope, code and decode our personal and collective experiences.

In order to explore interior space of state of mind, memories and mortality, I borrowed external forms of human brain cells and abstracted them in my new works presented in this exhibition, paying attention to detail depiction in resin works for new visual experience for the viewers. My concern over passage of time, transience, and contemplation of origin of universe have been expressed in depth in multicolor layered translucent polymer, which was cast from silicon rubber mould, plaster mould, which was originally shaped in clay. The windows are shown in different visual details from both sides so that viewers can look in their own neural pathways as well as look out for interconnecting with the external societal reality.

In referencing to inside the brain at another metaphorical way, I created a micro level hanging neurons and synapses in overhead installation in the gallery so that as the people walk through they can reexamine and recollect the stored memories.

"We dream when we look out and wake up when we look in" paraphrasing Carl Jung, I hope my works can provide viewers an experience of looking through windows of my sculpture and passing through their psychological tunnel as a meaningful pathway to their own mindscape.
