One of my recent projects ‘Tree of Life V,’ was an inward journey into the psychological landscape of the human mind with focus on coding, decoding and recollection of memories. Subsequently, I continued to examine the visible and invisible world in relation to the interior space of the conscious and unconscious mind in ‘Synaptic Tales.’ While the past works deal with concerns over human mortality in relation to immortal God, the current body of works is solely about becoming emotionally resolved and spiritually liberated. There will be several works in the gallery, two of which I would like to introduce here. Between those two works I will also present a performance at the opening reception of the exhibition. There will be several other works that bridge my past works and current works.
First, there are the gauze wrapped fiberglass tree roots (‘Tree of Life VI’) that represent different stages of one’s life as a source of inner energy, personal history and mortality. Adjacent to the tree roots, l will present ‘Salpuri’ dance, which is considered the most complicated Korean traditional dance from the Joseon Dynasty in order to perform Jeong-Joong-Dong (serenity amidst movement) to express restrained inner emotions in extremely subtle dance movements. Salpuri Dance is originally derived from shamanistic rituals for spirit purification in ancient times, but turned into a purely artistic dance form for its beauty and grace in modern times. I chose this particular dance as a metaphor of my personal journey, having roots as a Korean woman and artist, and going through a lifelong art making process trying to reach spiritual transcendence and my own personal spiritual liberation.
The next work in focus is a seven foot tall resin work installation (‘Grace Project 1’), with LED backed illumination that gives a sense of beauty and grace in light and color. I created it inspired by my experience of watching a guest conductor at a church in Singapore a few years back. Leading a choir with the powerful sound, he was making unique circular motion by arms, fingers and upper body connecting his physical movement and spiritual energy, which fascinated me and made me create this new work in repeated patterns of circular structural forms. The healing process for others and humanity in ‘Tree of Life V’ is healing process for myself in ‘Tree of life VI’. It is a personal reflection of my artistic roots being transformed by connecting with Grace of God as the ultimate conductor of my universe.

By borrowing external forms of human brain cells and abstracting them for new visual experience, I tried to express my concerns over time, transience, and mortality in layers of depth, which was first shaped in clay, cast in plaster mold, to silicon rubber mold, and finally into multi-layered resin cast.
